Catalogue of cancellations due to wet summer

THE CLA Game Fair is the latest big event to fall victim to Britain’s wet summer. But spare a thought too for smaller shows also hit by the weather.

Due to attract 200,000 people to Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, the Game Fair (20-22 July) was  cancelled on Thursday (12 July).

It came just 48 hours after the three-day Great Yorkshire Show (10-12 July) was abandoned following a waterlogged first day.

Other big events curtailed this year include the Suffolk Show (7-8 June), which was called off just 15 minutes after the gates opened on the second day.

Cancellation of these three events alone will cost rural businesses millions of pounds in lost revenue – and a whole lot of heartache.

But smaller rural shows have also been affected.

They might not make many headlines but small shows are just as important to the communities they serve – and the army of volunteers that put them on.
